Atwoli Trademarks Famous ‘Aalaa’ Phrase
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, has finally trademarked the famous aalaa’, ‘alaaa’ ‘alaaaa’ phrase.
This means, he now owns the intellectual right to the phrase and anyone who wants to use it must first seek permission from him.
Any advertiser, DJ or common citizen will now not use the phrase freely as before as failure to first seek permission, might land you in jail.
The COTU boss legal team, successfully applied to have the phrase trademarked under Atwoli’s name up to 2031.
“Yes, they should get permission from him. And, any advert can’t use the word ‘alaa!’ unless they get his permission,” he said, noting that any advertisement that contains “alaa” will be deemed to have breached the trademark,”Atwoli’s personal assistant Adams Barasa said
Henry Kibe from the patents division of the Kenya Industrial Property Institute confirmed that the COTU Boss had patented the word.
“It is true we have patented ‘alaa’ as an intellectual property, but I can’t tell whether it is also illegal for someone to utter it in public,” he said.
