Ministry Of Gender Happy With Lobby Group

Veronica Nduva, The Principal Secretary of the State Department of Gender, has commended women lobby groups for their concerted efforts in championing women agenda and leadership in the just concluded 2022 general election.
Speaking During the Launch of the Report of Women’s Performance in the 2022 General Elections; Gender Perspectives organised by Echo Network Africa (ENA) and Democracy Trust Fund (DTF),Ms Veronica said such groups were critical in giving women morale, encouragement, confidence as well as financial support that saw a number of them got elected in various seats.

The PS added that women especially those in political space will at all time yearn to see a just society with equal and shared opportunity.
“As a government we appreciate the role played by state and non-state actors in entirely and across the board which include women’s lobby organisations in contributing towards the attainment of an equal society. That’s why I applaud the flagship initiative Chagua Mama campaign, a partnership aimed at accelerating gender inclusiveness in the run-up to the 2022 general election,” she said.
The Chagua Mama campaign was organised by Echo Network Africa, Democracy Trust Fund and other partners.
On her part, ECHO Network Africa Chairperson Dr Nyambura Koigi underscored the importance of continuing training of women in political leadership and those aspiring to vie in future.
‘’I want to ask you to roll up your sleeves and prepare for 2027. We want to see the number of women in political space keep on increasing. For us we shall continue with training on political leadership and life skills’’ said Dr Nyambura.

Dr Nyambura Said there was a significant Improvement in the position of governor in 2022 compared to 2017.
‘’For instance the position of governor, women performed well. In 2017 we had representation of 6% but in 2022 the percentage shot up by 8 to 14%. Other areas with improvements were the MP and Deputy Governor position’’ she added.

However, according to Dr Nyambura, the two-thirds gender rule is still an elephant in the room especially in parliamentary roles such as committee chairs, chief whips, speakers, and minority and majority leader seats.
