“Karibu Nikuwe Mwizi”: Kamba Artist Masekete Shares His Emotional Journey
Kamba gospel artist Jackson Mutinda, also known as Masekete, has shared how he has overcome many challenges to become a renowned musician whose songs are listened to by audiences in the lower eastern region and beyond.
In an interview with YouTuber Oga Obinna, Masekete shared his journey from humble beginnings to his current success as a musician. Telling about his first experience upon arriving in Nairobi, where he found himself unsure of his destination and purpose.
“Kufika nikaanza Kulala kwa vibanda. Siku ya nne nikalala kwa dada mmoja alikuwa malaya. Kesho yake nikaamka mapema kwa sababu nilitaka nilale tena nikamwambia dada naomba nikufulie nguo.” Masekete said.

After some time, Masekete managed to secure a job in a hotel, where he worked until his employer left. His employer kindly supported him to start a small business.
“Akaninunulia crate mbili za mayai, ndoo ya kuuza mayai, kakijiko kadogo na kabakuli ka kukatakatia kachumbari na kisu pia, lakini hakujua mahali nitalala,” He said.
Life in Nairobi became challenging as his business began to decline. Faced with limited options, Masekete and his associates opted to theft. On the day he was supposed to be introduced to the gang, turns out as the day his friends were hunted by the police and fatally shot in front of him.

“Vijana tulikuwa nao wakashootiwa, kwa sababu sikuwa na silaha nikaruhusiwa nikimbie niende, na hapo ndipo nilikimbia mpaka Mombasa Road nikaomba lift kwa lorry Hadi Mombasa, nikaenda kuanza maisha mapya.”
In Mombasa, Masekete had a chance to meet with gospel artist Faith KK, whom he approached with a request to collaborate on a song. Together, they recorded several songs.Masekete eventually found employment as a caretaker in a church, where his responsibilities included cleaning the church, toilets, and cooking for the pastor. With his savings, he started singing and recorded his first song and the rest as they say, remain history.

Over time, Masekete has established himself as a known gospel artist in Ukambani. Some of his songs have gained significant traffic on YouTube. His most popular song, “Vangithya Kila Kindu,” has gained 2.7 million views on the platform.
