Mbusii: From Selling Soup In Slums, Becoming A Pastor To Reggae Journalist

Mbusii, born Daniel Githinji Mwangi was raised in Korokocho slums more than three decades ago.

The celebrated Radio guru behind the Reggae Show on Radio Jambo is not new in Kenya’s media industry because of his unique voice and creativity.

Mbusii was born to Christian parents and baptized at the Full Gospel Church of Kenya before he became a Rastafarian.

Mbusii joined Ghetto Radio as a Traffic News reporter and later an office messenger where he used to be paid Ksh 3,ooo monthly and often time, his salary was delayed or forgotten paid.

At his time of age, a preacher prophesied to his parents that he’d become a pastor something that he lived for because the prophesy came to fulfilment.

“Nikiwa mdogo, wazazi wangu walitabiriwa na pastor eti nitakuwa na sahisi mimi ni pastor. Nahubiri kwa radio.” He disclosed.

Mbusii attended Eastleigh Airport Primary School and therein, joined Maina Wanjigi High School.

After High School education, he went back to Korokocho Slums to peddle drugs and sell soup as a hustle when his High School teacher linked him to an acting role at Kenya National Theatre (KNT).

At KNT, he acted in high school setbooks for a while then joined Crazy Kenya, a TV acting team alongside the renowned actor Mshamba.

At Crazy Kenya, he said in one exclusive that he quit the team because his ideas were exchanged and given to another person, and that made him return to KNT.

While at KNT, Ghetto Radio head Roba came to look for a radio comedian with a good mastery of Sheng and comics where at several times, he ran away from Roba thinking he was a police in hunt to arrest him.

Mbusii joined Ghetto Radio as a Traffic News reporter and later an office messenger where he used to be paid Ksh 3,ooo monthly and often time, his salary was delayed or forgotten paid.

One day when he was about to quit, a new manager Maji Maji joined the radio and changed his life by giving him a mid-morning show Goteana before giving an evening show.

In the Evening Drive, he hosted alongside a former street boy Bonoko who gained fame after he narrated a police shootout in the street that led to the death of several persons.

Hence luck strikes once at every man’s door, Radio Jambo came calling him to be offered a plum job and joined alongside LionDee as an Evening Drive host.

According to reports published on social media that Mbusii earns more than a six-figure salary, he distanced from the rumours in an interview with MC Jessy.

“Sina pesa. Hakuna eti nilipewa pesa nyingi. Zile pesa watu walsema kwa mtandao si hizo.” He said. 

The radio guru is a family man married to a law expert popularly known as Mama Stacy and he has three beautiful girls; Sandra, Stacy and Melan.
