Kenyans Are Using 718 Condoms Per Hour And 17,000 Daily According To Government Stats

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has disclosed that the National Aids Control Council distributed 3,157,900 condoms in non-health settings over the past six months. However, this figure does not include condoms sold by private entities.

During a report to the Departmental Committee on Health regarding the State Department for Medical Services Budget Estimates for the Financial Year 2024-25, Nakhumicha highlighted that the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) served 1,207,482 clients on Antiretroviral Treatment during the same period.

Furthermore, the Department of Family Health provided family planning commodities to 38.8 percent of women of reproductive age.

In January 2023, Nakhumicha refuted claims of condom shortages in the country, citing an inventory of 38 million condoms in storage. She clarified that reported shortages in certain regions were due to distribution challenges from Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) stores.

“I would like to clarify to Kenyans that we do not have a shortage of condoms in the country. As a matter of fact, we have 38 million pieces of condoms. You can see that we are overstocked,” Nakhumicha said.

Nakhumicha emphasized the commitment of the State Department for Medical Services to collaborate with Parliament and other stakeholders to ensure the provision of quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare services to Kenyans.

The CS noted that the country had 38 million pieces of condoms in store.

She advocated for an increase in the budgetary allocation to address funding challenges faced by the department.

“We continue to reiterate the need to revise upwards the budgetary ceiling for the State Department if we are to deal with funding challenges we continue to experience,” she added.
