Carbonated beverages have for a long time been believed to reduce sperm quality and motility when consumed one litre a day.
However, research conducted by researchers from Northwest Minzu University in China claims the consumption of carbonated beverages increases the size of testicles and sperm count.
In the research conducted and published in the scientific journal Acta Endocrinol, scientists used mice to come to their conclusion.

They took mice as a sample where one group of mice was given plain water and the other group was given Coca-Cola and Pepsi drinks to analyse the effect of carbonated beverages on sperm count and testicle sizes.
After 15 days, the researchers measured the size of the testicles, blood sugar tests and weight where they discovered the mice that had consumed Coca-Cola and Pepsi drinks demonstrated a high rise in blood sugar, quantity of sperms and increase in size of the testicles.
“The concentration of serum testosterone in all mice were enhanced after Pepsi and Coca Cola treatment” research showed. According to them, high doses of Coca-Cola and Pepsi could improve testosterone secretion in mice.

In addition, drinking Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola could promote testicle development, enhance testosterone secretion, and increase serum testosterone concentrations.
“Our findings provided the scientific basis for fully understanding carbonated beverages effects and their mechanism on development and reproduction functions of humans, but also benefit to prevent prostate dysfunction and cancer,” the study authors wrote.
However, in line with the previous research, this study brings in a scientific battle where carbonated beverages were said to be altering hormones that affect ovulation in women.

In a survey of 2,500 men done in previous research, the researchers said that sperm quantity reduces by 30% when one litre of carbonated beverages is consumed daily.
In a recent study, it was established that massive consumption of coffee or caffeine increases testosterone production.
So far, there’s still little documentation correlating reproductive function and fertility in animals and humans although researchers claim more studies have to be done.

What has been in existence has been claims that consumption of carbonated beverages may lead to obesity, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.
In the previous studies on the other hand, “health damage effects of carbonated beverages on adolescents and children were serious.”
