Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba has revealed that his nation hosting the 2023 AFCON is bringing him a sense of pride for him.

 

The Ivorian football icon expressed his pride at seeing his country host the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations since the last time the nation hosted the tournament was 40 years ago which dates way back in 1984.

Speaking to CAF Online, Drogba was a proud man as he had this to say about Ivory Coast hosting AFCON; “It brings a sense of pride for me. The last time was in 1984,” The fact of having worn the jersey of the national team and now seeing the tournament hosted on home soil is exceptional.”

 

Côte d’Ivoire commonly known as Ivory Coast will host the 2023 AFCON tournament slated to commence on 13th January until 11th February, with 24 nations participating in their quest to win the biggest sporting trophy in the continent.

 

The global football icon who has contributed immensely to African football’s rich history says that seeing his nation host AFCON. “We are very happy to welcome all of Africa. It is going to be a party,” Drogba added.

The hosts Ivory Coast are pooled together with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in Group A.
