On Thursday 21st of December 2023, the European Court of Justice ruled out that “neither UEFA nor FIFA can impose sanctions on clubs that participate in alternative competitions”.

 

This came after an idea of creating a new competition which would involve European clubs away from UEFA competitions such as Champions League and Europa league back in 2021.

 

The move saw a lot of backlashes across Europe including European clubs, Governments and Political leaders.

 

The Super League CEO Bernd Reichart had appealed the decision in 2021 that had blocked creation of the Super League where on Thursday ECJ ruled that soccer’s governing bodies UEFA and FIFA acted contrary to EU competition law by blocking plans for a breakaway Super League.

A decision that seemed like a BIG win for the Super League CEO Bernd Reichart and also for Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona clubs.

 

That news was celebrated by Real Madrid along with Barcelona, has been leading the fight to get the new competition off the ground.

 

“Today a Europe of freedoms has triumphed, and also football and its fans have triumphed,” Madrid president Florentino Pérez said. “We are facing a great opportunity to improve European club football.”

 

Minutes after the ECJ ruling, several clubs and Leagues came out to reject the idea of creation of the Super League.

 

With Premier League and top clubs EPL leading the way in protesting the idea, Manchester United was the first club in EPL to reject the Super League with their Manchester Neighbours Man City following the suit.

 

London clubs led by Chelsea and Tottenham came out to reject the same with Arsenal being the latest club to do so whereas after 24 hours Liverpool are yet to release statement on their stance about the same.

 

In Bundesliga, Bayern Munich were the first club to reject the idea of creation the Super League together with their fellow counter parts Borussia Dortmund.

 

La Liga followed the suit with them come out to reject the creation of the Super league with Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, Girona, Sevilla, Valencia and Villareal among the La Liga rejected it.

 

Only two clubs that are in support of creation of the Super League so far with Real Madrid and Barcelona that in for the idea.

In Serie A, Inter Mila led other Italian clubs in rejecting the plan with AS Roma and Atalanta joining them in the same.

 

Whereas in France, the PSG president Al Khelaifi hit on Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez video with 14 Champions League behind him.

 

“It’s strange to talk about the Super League with the UEFA Champions League trophies behind you.”

 

PSG was the first club to reject the idea of Super league with AS Monaco followed the suit.

 

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin also came out to bash the idea of creation of the super league, “We will not try to stop them. They can create whatever they want”.

 

“I hope they start their top competition as soon as possible… with two clubs”.

 

“Football is not for sale”.
