Soldiers Dismissed From Army Over Viral Video Flogging Fellow Soldier

The 5th Division Court Martial has made the decision to dismiss four of the soldiers that appeared in a viral video flogging a one of their own suspected of stealing a motorcycle.

 

On 10th December, 2023, a video surfaced on social media showing the soldiers torturing Nelson Omon from Lagot military detach on camera. The video went viral and on Tuesday 12th, the UPDF moved to arrest all the suspects following the uproar from social media users.

The suspects including Corporal Richard Burton Odong Otto, the then Lagot Detach Commander, and Privates Dennis Ogwang, Martin Henry Omara and Sunday Mungu Acel were arrested and charged with aggravated torture.

 

Private Morris Omara pleaded not guilty to the charges while four of the accused pleaded guilty. They were sentenced to one year behind bars and also dismissed from the UPDF army.

According to the deputy defense spokesperson, Col. Deo Akiiki, Private Omara Morris was acquitted of the charges by Col. Ismail Ssendagira, the chairman of the 5th Division Court Martial acquitted after Corporal Odong Otto Richard Burton testified that he was around at the time the crime was committed.

 

“This court therefore hereby sentences you Col Odong Richard Burton, Pte Mongu Acel Sunday, Pte Ogwang Denish, and Pte Omara Martin Henry to dismissal with disgrace from the Defence Forces and imprisonment for one year at Uganda government prison Lira,” Col Sendagire said.

The court session was held at Lagot Primary School, Lagot Village in Pajong Parish, Mucwini Sub- County, Kitgum district. The convicted were given a period of 14 days to appeal the sentence to the General Court Martial in Kampala.
