"Generators Failed": KAA Explains Blackout At JKIA

Two of our four generators failed to immediately activate, KAA wrote

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA)  has issued a sincere apology to passengers and stakeholders following a power outage at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday night.

According to KAA, the incident that occurred on December 10, 2023, was caused by the failure of two backup generators, affecting Terminals 1A and 1E.

KAA, in a statement, acknowledged the inconvenience caused, explaining, ” Over the past week, our generator system at JKIA has undergone rigorous testing to ensure continuous and reliable power supply. Despite these efforts, during tonight’s power outage, two of our four generators failed to immediately activate.”

However, the authority reassured the public that the JKIA Tower, Runway, and the remaining airport facilities continued normal operations.

“Our technical team responded swiftly to the situation, and we are pleased to report that the fault was rectified quickly. Power was fully restored to the affected terminals,” stated the authority.

In response, KAA has pledged to take necessary measures to enhance and maintain its facilities and services.

The authority has attributed the airport’s outage to a nationwide blackout, as explained by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), citing a ‘suspected fault affecting the power system.’

This incident marks the third power outage at the airport within three months.
