Pupil Die By Suicide After Being Detained In School Over Fee Balance

Mulumba Joseph, the District Education Officer in Lwengo District has closed down Coloh Children’s Foundation Primary School where a child died after being detained by the school authorities over school fees balance of UGX. 100,000.

 

The deceased Joel Ojuma, a 9-year-old pupil is one of few who were detained when the school closed for third term holidays before he allegedly committed suicide.

 

According to reports, Kasifa Alinda, the sister of the deceased went to school to pick him up but the school bursar refused to release him without paying the balance. This made him ending up sleeping at school together with another boy identified as Allan Lwanga.

The following day (25th November), Lwanga was picked up by his parents, leaving Ojuma behind with another girl Namugga Ramula who was sleeping in a separate dormitory.

 

At lunch time, the school cook, identified as Robert, sent Namugga to take food for Robert but unfortunately found him hanging on a rope. She alerted the teacher who reported to the director and together reported to the police.

 

The officers visited the crime scene where they discovered the dead body hanging on the triple decker bed in the boys’ dorm. A case of suicide by hanging was registered under KZG/CRB/293/2023.

Three key suspects were arrested in the case including Chris Matovu, the school director, Julius Ssekatawa headmaster and school bursar; Kagenda Muzafaru.

 

Mulumba advised parents to refrain from taking their children to the said school until further notice when investigations would have been completed.

 

“I further encourage private schools to follow the rules and regulations set by the Ministry Of Education to see that they avoid such incidents,” he said.
