Prudence Shalimba, a candidate from Shinyalu constituency, Kakamega county, is now rejoicing after the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) revised her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) marks from 358 to an uplifting 409.

Prudence, a former student of Mukango Hope Academy who secured the index one position, was shocked by her KCPE results last week when Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu released the results.

Despite expecting higher results due to her previous good academic performance, she was disappointed to find out that she had scored 358 marks.

“I was happy that the results were out, however, the happiness was short-lived when my father told me that I had scored 358 marks. I was so devastated because those were not my true marks,” she revealed.

Gladys Shalimba, the candidate’s mother, raised concerns about the unexpected low score in Kiswahili, Prudence’s favorite subject,“My daughter could not score poorly in Kiswahili, which is her favorite subject.”

The family, unwilling to accept the initial results, wrote to KNEC on Friday, requesting a review of their daughter’s marks.

The mother of three emphasized the need for accuracy in results saying, “We are urging KNEC and the Ministry of Education to be keen when releasing the results to avoid confusion among parents and students.”

“We cancelled our planned celebrations because we had not expected to receive such results, but now with these higher marks, we are planning for a celebration to appreciate our God,” shared Shalimba.

Japheth Aliata, Director of the Mukango Hope Academy, expressed concern over the confusion and distress caused among many affected students brought by the initial results.

“I do not see the need to hurry and release the results when we have a lot of time. Let those responsible be keen and proofread the results before they release them because this has painted a bad picture of KNEC,” he said.

A few days ago, parents from the Kitengela International School protested at the KNEC offices demanding irregularities in the recently released results be rectified.
