Popular Kenyan Comedian Edwin Butita alias Eddie Butita has opened up on his first salary as an artist.

While speaking to Radio 47’s Billy Miya and Mbaruk Mwalimu on Maskani 47 show, the renowned funny man recounted one of the major struggles he had to go through while attempting to build his now paying career.

According to him, it was on one night after attempting to build himself to secure a platform but in vain that one of his friends came up with a ‘brilliant’ idea that would see him perform before an audience.

Ruto: Njugush, Butita Earn More than me

” It was in 2011. There is a restaurant that used to have a club inside it in Nairobi CBD called Club Town. After attempting auditions without getting a stage, one of my friends hatched a plan that would see us hold a show inside a club and make money.”

“You’ll get into the club and perform since most people get drunk over there”

Without much thought, Butita and nine others joined the plan and patiently waited for the club to get full hoping to earn some coins from their show.

At 9:30 pm, Butita and his colleagues had 3 people in the club. At around 11:45pm, they had 7 people. It was until between 12:30a.m to 1:00a.m that the club got full to the brim.

Excited Butita and his squad gave it their whole during their performance before their friend, the event organiser gave them an unfortunate news at the end of the show.

“The mistake is all mine! I never knew people would be this many. We could have charged them an entrance fee at the gate.” reads the statement that broke their heart

It is then that the friend had to divide with them what he had (Ksh. 200) to cater for their fare.

To cut the long story short, after a struggle trying to divide the amount amongst the ten of them, Butita was forced to stand inside a bus to Kaariobangi to save Ksh. 10 from his salary despite there being an empty chair.

“Nikachukua gari ya Kariobangi wakasema Ksh. 10 ni kusimama. Nikalipa Ksh 10 lakini kufika OTC, mtu akashuka nikaketi. Conductor akanishoutia. Nilisimama kiti ikiwa bure. Hiyo ndiyo inakuanga mshahara wangu wa kwanza kwenye industry,” he said

Butita’s story is among many that motivate one not to give up but focus on their talent since it would pay some day.
