Government Postpones Planned Reopening Of Kenya-Somalia Border
The Kenyan Government has postponed the planned reopening of Kenya-Somali border following the increase in terror attacks.
According to Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, the Government is keen to ensure protection of all its Citizens and therefore the delayed opening is one meant to give it time to deal with the attacks.
“The government will delay the planned reopening of Kenya-Somalia border points until we conclusively deal with the recent spate of terror attacks and cross-border crime”
Speaking during a press briefing in Wajir, Kindiki outlined that the recent attacks prompted a policy shift in Refugee database management
“We will neither roll back nor backtrack on the implementation of the Refugee Act 2022 and its obligations as a signatory to international treaties”
“However, we must take decisive action to safeguard the security interests of both genuine refugees and our host communities.”
Kindiki had earlier highlighted that the Government is determined to defeat Al-shabaab and other violent groups threatening the country.
“The Government shall defeat Al-shabaab and all violent extremists who continue to threaten our national security and destabilise communities in North Eastern Kenya.”
