Londiani Truck Driver Speaks Narrates Ordeal
Gilbert Ntuyemungu, 52, a Rwandese who was driving the truck that recently caused the tragic accident at Londiani junction has broken his silence on the fatal experience.
While speaking to the press from his hospital bed, on Monday, July 3, Ntuyemungu says he was driving down slope at the Malaba junction when the truck’s brakes failed.
His effort to take control of the speeding truck proved futile as the weight of the cement he was transporting to Busia made it impossible.
It was then that he remembers hearing screams as the truck moved down slope with his last memory being hearing the impact of the crash.
“I was driving from Simba Cement and when I got to the bridge, the brakes failed”
“All I remember is I tried to reach for the breaks to slow down the speeding truck but they failed. I could hear screams but the truck was still moving… I regained consciousness yesterday ( Sunday)”
Ntuyemungu who sustained multiple injuries on his head, legs and on his back in the crash and lost all his belongings, has been a truck driver since 1997 and regularly used the Nakuru, Kericho-Londiani route.
He added that his family aren’t aware of his involvement in the accident as he has not communicated with them.
