Home » Man Drowns After Bet To Swim Across Kabaka’s Lake

Fear gripped the family of a man who drowned in The Kabaka’s Lake; Africa’s evacuated lake and the largest man-made lake in Uganda.

Mushabe Ronald, 26, a resident of Nansana and a boda boda cyclist at Nakasero stage, Kampala placed a bet of Ush70,000 with his colleagues to swim across the Kabaka’s Lake or midway and back to win the money.

The deceased together with four others then rode their bikes to the lake in Ndeeba to kick start the competition. Mushabe, who was eager to take the money home dived in the water, swam successfully into the middle of the lake but unfortunately did not make it back to the mainland where he was swimming towards ‘Pope Paul’ Hotel.

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was seen drowning and signaling with his hands asking for help but the water was too deep for anyone to swim through to rescue him. They tried reaching out for help from the boats but by the time they arrived, Mushabe had already drowned.

Fellow cyclists who had come to witness Mushabe go through with the bet recorded the whole ordeal on their phones and when he was confirmed dead, they all fled the scene leaving behind his motorcycle, Baja UFT 982S, mobile phone and clothes he was wearing.

Ali Mukasa who was present at the time of the tragedy recounted trying to stop the deceased from risking his life but in vain.

Police from Ndeeba and Katwe secured the area and with the help of the motor boats riders on the lake were able to retrieve the dead body after several hours of searching.

The deceased left behind a wife and a months old baby.
