Kenya’s Wins Women’s World Boxing Championship In 13 Years

For the first time in 13 years, Kenya has won a bout in Women’s World Boxing Championships. This is after  Christine Ongare displayed a powerful show in the second round to win against  Tanzania’s  Rahma Maganga.

She now goes into  history books as the second Kenyan female boxer to win a fight in this tournament after Mary Muthoni, the first Kenyan winner in the 2010 Women Worlds in Barbados.

Ongare controlled the first round by servicing Rahma with heavy left and right punches, forcing the referee to give Rahma a standing eight count in this round which Christine comfortably won.

The Kenyan increased her work rate in round two, scoring punches with clinical efficiency. She also maintained her stability, accuracy as she constantly gave Rahma the right  doses forcing referee to waive it off to save young Tanzanian from further humiliations . She was somewhat surprised why the referee stopped the fight.

Ongare now moves to the pre-quarters and will take on either Turkish U22 European light-flyweight champion Erivan Barut or Guatemala’s Dayana Gonzalez.
