Girl Who Scored 405 Marks Now Crushing Stones
Sera Kauchi Naftali, 16, is depressed after her dream to become a surgeon met headwinds because of lack of fees.
The 16-year-old girl scored 405 marks during last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) at Bandacho Primary School in Magarini constituency.
She got a form one slot at Moi Girls High School, Isinya where she has not enrolled yet. She has lost hope of joining her dream school because her parents cannot afford her school fees.
Despite applying for scholarships, the bright girl did not get any assistance and spends her time weeping as she handles household chores.
Together with her mother, Mariam Rodgers, Naftali has resorted to doing a lowly job of smashing stones to make ballast for sale, but the money they generate is hardly enough to even put food on the table.
She fears that if she doesn’t join school on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, her spot might be filled by another student, and the idea of not realizing her dreams depresses her.
Journalists spotted the girl and her mother crashing stones in a quarry in Adu ward, Magarini division, approximately a kilometer from where she had attended school.
She put on a brave face and smiled for the camera, but her fears were obvious.
Sera and her mother appealed to well-wishers for assistance to be able to afford Sera’s tuition because her father is indeed unemployed.
