Homa Bay Varsity Students Receive Free Condoms Ahead Of Valentine’s Day

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, university students from Homa Bay county have a reason to smile after a Non-governmental organization handed out free boxes of condoms to them.

 

Tom Mboya University students on 13th February were overjoyed in commemoration of World Condoms Day when Maisha Youth a non-profit organization, distributed condoms to curb unexpected pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

 

The 2023 World Condom Day theme being equalize, the theme spearheads the end of triple threat; HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies and sexual Gender Based Violence in the society.

 

According to January health survey report, Homa Bay was reported to have got 24% teen pregnancy prevalence while HIV prevalence lying at 19.6%.

 

Since the wake of COVID-19 in the country, Kenya has been experiencing shortages of condoms prompting the increase in the spread of STDs and early pregnancies among school going girls.

 

 

Last year, counties of Garisa, Busia, Kisumu and Nairobi experienced a drastic change in condom shortage where most commercial sex workers started reusing and recycling the happy hats.

 

 

According of National Aids Control Council (NACC), Kenya needs more then 450 Million condoms to serve it’s citizens effectively. However, Kenya’s government due to the shortage, is able to supply 1.6 milion condoms monthly.

 

 

Due to the shortages, currently Kenya depends on international organizations such as the Global Fund, to meet its annual condom supply.
