Nudity Rules To Be Overhauled On Instagram And Facebook

Meta’s oversight independent body has said the company to overhaul nudity policies on Instagram and Facebook. The independent body which was made by Meta Company, has said some rules are biased and only sides on binary view.
Speaking on the overhaul, intersex, transgender and non-binary people have been left out regarding adult nudity policies
The overhaul which lets people post bare nipples on Instagram and Facebook, has focused on changing adult nudity policies. The existing policy prohibiting female nipples images other than; breastfeeding and gender confirmation surgery, the body says it’s confusing.
Additionally, it says the policy creates confusion to users and moderators and leads to content being wrongly removed.
The board overturned Meta’s previous decision to pull down two Instagram posts from a non- binary and transgender US- based couple.
In the photos posted, the couple were bare chested with their nipples covered but the users appealed against the removal and Meta restored the posts.
On the caption, the couple were fundraising for one of the pair to go for a gender affirming surgery, to have a flat chest.
According to Meta, they were removed for violating the Sexual Solicitation Community Standards, for containing bare breasts and fundraising.
In 2012, a “Free The Nipple” film produced in USA sparked more protests from civilians as the campaign for the same had been existence for a decade.
The campaign and protests, stipulated for women to bare their breasts whether online or offline.
However, the Independent Board has said Meta should change its approach to managing nudity and ensure there’s inclusivity and respect for human rights standards.
“We are constantly evaluating our policies to help make our platforms safer for everyone.
“We know more can be done to support the LGBTQ+ community, and that means working with experts and LGBTQ+ advocacy organisations on a range of issues and product improvements” said Meta Spokesperson.
The oversight board which majorly includes elites such as lawyers and human rights experts, was created by Meta to monitor content and moderate content, is funded by Meta though operates independently.
