Residents Storm Police Station, Kill Suspected Witch
Police in Namwiwa, Bukunya Village reported a group of angry residents that stormed the station and beat to death a suspected witch doctor.
The deceased identified as Muhairwe Bingwa, a renowned witchdoctor around the village had been arrested on Saturday following claims that he exhumed the body of a fellow resident, the late Hawa Natwoli who had passed on earlier.
According to reports, Muhairwe dismembered the body, cutting off the skull and throwing the rest of the body parts in the neighboring sugarcane plantation.
His arrest came after the police visited the area to gather more clues about the matter when the K-9 dog rested by Muhairwe’s bed. This caused chaos among the locals prompting them to attack the witchdoctor. He was however saved by the officers who took him into custody at Namwiwa police.
The mob stormed the station and overpowered the unarmed officer who was by himself for night duty. They dragged Muhairwe out of his cell and butchered him to death at the police premises.
The LC1 chairperson Baganzi Rashid revealed that the deceased had been pinned by five families that had reportedly complained about their dead loved ones being dug out of their graves the past two months. There was no evidence pinning anyone to these claims.
He blamed the superstitions and beliefs in witchcraft among the people that have caused a rise in mob justice crimes.
Busoga North police spokesperson Kasadha Michael confirmed Muhairwe’s death, stating that investigations were underway to have the culprits arrested.
The deceased’s body was taken to Namwiwa Health Center III mortuary for a postmortem.
