Rape Suspect Dies In Police Cell

One prisoner in Mayuge Central Police Station, East Busoga has been confirmed dead by the police after he collapsed in detention.
The deceased identified as Ntende Bernard was arrested on 22nd April, 2023 on charges of rape and detained at the same police station. Reports from fellow inmates revealed that he collapsed on the cemented floor during night hours but they did not pay any attention to him thinking he was manipulating his way out of prison.
When they woke up and noticed that he was lying in the same position, they called for assistance from the duty police officers who rushed to the cell immediately.
Inmates further noted that prior to his death; Ntende looked depressed and on many occasions ignored the food that was brought to him by his relatives and prison.
Busoga East police spokesperson Nandawula Diana in a presser revealed that the officers in charge tried counseling and convincing him to have his meals but all the pleas fell on deaf ears.
By the time of his death, the deceased had recorded his statement concerning the case and his file had been forwarded to the state attorney to be reviewed.
Ntende’s body was taken to Mayuge Health Center IV mortuary for postmortem to identify the cause of death before being handed over to the family members for burial.
